This lovely story has been circulating on social media since 2022. Checking to ensure it was true, I found research from SApeople News (“Your Worldwide South African Community”) confirming its veracity, though that source states there may have been a bit of embellishment, as in the goodbye kiss (alas!).
Maiorca had told the story himself in 2011 when he was participating in a campaign to protect Bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean that was launched by Sea Shepherd, an organization devoted to the protection of the oceans and the wildlife within them.
He said the dolphin guided him and his daughters–“almost leading us by our hands”– to his mate, ensnared in a swordfish net.
“I maintain that his brain waves influenced our minds. What is certain is that our arms were the stretcher by means of which we carried that poor exhausted animal, wracked by contractions, to the surface.
“As soon as she was on the surface, after breathing out foam and blood, she gave birth to a dolphin calf under the watchful eyes of her mate. The little one was led to his mama’s nipples by gentle strokes of the adult dolphin’s beak.
“I like to think that on that day we reunited a family.”
Maiorca (his name has also been spelled Mallorca and Majorca) died in 2016 at age 85.
“Until man learns to respect and speak to the animal world, he can never know his true role on Earth.”
Although I don’t know for sure that Enzo Maiorca actually said those powerful words, he seems to have lived his life accordingly.

Thank you, Annie, for this wonderful and uplifting story! It reminds me about Dr Dolittle stories, while they were fantasy, the tales save the life of at least one soldier during the World War I as they were told in the trenches.

Hi, Joanna. As I recall, you did a Dr Dolittle piece not long ago—yes? When it comes to interactions like these, I love to see truth vying successfully with fiction. Cheers!

Hi. I’ve read similar stories about dolphins. They have great abilities and can think in ways similar to humans.

They’re amazing—and they’re evidence that we humans need a great deal more sensitivity and wonder in thinking about animals, IMO.

So some fool says something about the timing of Mitch stepping down which sent me to the microwave steaming about how dumb do they think we are rant which turns out Ace is my soul audience. So Ace says I don’t know but you are kinda dumb.🫤The one I talk to the most might be a little low on the respect.😂

He’s surely smarter than the commentators who are talking about Mitch as if he were the last bastion of reasonable Republicanism, instead of the horrible unscrupulous man who gave Trump a pass and made this unspeakable SCOTUS majority happen!

Our dog, Ollie, a goldendoodle, was trained as a therapy dog. His interaction with very young children and senior citizens never ceases to amaze me. His calmness, gentility, and caring makes me smile and at times leaves me wordless. The smiles that he generates among people gives me a sense of joy that is almost indescribable. Now, on the other hand, when I play with him, the caring is always there, but the calmness and gentility, not so much🤣.

Aha, so you push this wonderful, well trained guy to his limits, Steve? What kind of dog-daddy would do that?😏

Yes, that was wonderful. I have a thing about octopuses; wrote this nearly five years ago.
There’s also a charming novel that came out in 2022 called “Remarkably Bright Creatures.” It includes Marcellus, a talking octopus. I listened to it—Marcellus is, well, captivating!
