THANK YOU, KANSAS VOTERS!

In my recent post, I asked: “What’s the Matter in Kansas?” Republican politicians were deliberately trying to confuse voters into passing a constitutional amendment that would enable them to overturn a Supreme Court ruling protecting abortion.

Last night we learned that Kansas voters, by a VERY large margin, said NO WAY! Republicans, unaffiliated voters, and Democrats voted to protect their personal liberties. They outsmarted Republican trickery.

From America’s heartland—this is a major step in demonstrating the power of citizens who register and turn out in large numbers.

On to November!

Besides the large margin of the win, the high turnout (over 900,000, almost twice normal for a non-presidential primary election day in Kansas) shows that the fall of Roe and the subsequent wave of draconian laws in red states are indeed an electoral game-changer. Given the demographics of Kansas, a hell of a lot of Republicans and conservatives must have voted for abortion rights. The politicians who have been passing all these ghastly laws in other red states should be very worried.

    1. Precisely, Infidel. Another factor was the high number of unaffiliated voters who registered immediately after the decimation of Roe—showing they expected what was coming and were determined to make their voices heard. I find this small d democracy thrilling.

    2. MLK, Al Capone, sinner or saint you eventually have to trust your people. Ole Tom the slaveholder knew exactly what he meant when he wrote:But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security. I miss her, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose”, we’ll just have to trust in the “people” again.

      1. And hope that more of “the people” who believe in democracy vote than do those who believe the Big Lie and think Orban’s views are just dandy for America.

    3. Sidebar: Common Cause is working to “revise” the electoral college state by state (without needing an amendment). They are also pressing for legislation that requires the Supreme Court to have the same code of ethics that all other federal judges must abide by.
